SUTEE KUNAVICHAYANONT
Thailand’s Sutee Kunavichayanont (b. 1965) is known for his formally engaging and conceptually sophisticated oeuvre about power and politics in the world today. Predominantly installation-based, Sutee’s practice combines cerebral tactics, an aesthetic command of materials and techniques, and participation-inducing strategies that playfully enlist viewers in dialogues about freedom and civic responsibility. Though his perspective is initially nurtured in the context of Thailand, Sutee’s pieces transcend local specifics to speak to global audiences about democratic values and the thinking, contributing role of the citizen in society.

THE ROVING EYE
Contemporary Art from Southeast Asia
Curated by Iola Lenzi
17 September 2014–4 January 2015

From 17 September on, ARTER will host a large curated exhibition of Southeast Asian contemporary art for the first time in Turkey. Entitled “The Roving Eye: Contemporary Art from Southeast Asia” and curated by researcher and critic Iola Lenzi, the exhibition will present 40 works by 36 of Southeast Asia’s most innovative contemporary artists from Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore, Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam and Malaysia.
As well as introducing forms, materials, conceptual methodologies, and aesthetic codes commonly featured in the artistic production of the region, the exhibition will offer critical insights into today’s regional culture and the many tensions cleaving the societies of Southeast Asia. In particular, The Roving Eye argues multiple points of view on self and society as a central canon of Southeast Asian contemporary art.
The Roving Eye will feature installations, videos, sound pieces, photography and performances, a number of which were especially commissioned for the exhibition. The exhibition will place particular emphasis on works that embrace experience, interactivity and participation.
