JULIAN SCHNABEL
b. 1951, New York, USA. Lives and works in New York, USA. Schnabel is an American painter, printmaker, sculptor and filmmaker. As a Neo-Expressionist, he is most famous for his “plate paintings,” which are large-scale paintings set on broken ceramic plates. Outspoken, charismatic and unapologetic, his work frequently features religious and, in particular, Catholic iconography as well as Mexican culture. His creative impulse led him to branch out into photography and film, and his film “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly” earned him an award for best director at the 2007 Cannes Festival as well as an Academy Award nomination.
