May 2003, Hong Kong--Spanish painter, Marqués de Jadraque, who was commissioned to paint Pope John Paul II in 1982, came on this trip to paint Hong Kong. His Hong Kong scapes can be seen at 10 Chancery Lane Gallery from June 6-July 19, 2003.
This body of oil paintings are more impressionist than the aritist’s normal expressionist style but art dealer Katie de Tilly of 10 Chancery Lane Gallery told him to paint what we in Hong Kong feel about our beautiful city. The result, a group of paintings of the sea on both misty and sunny days, the city floating a top the chaos of Victoria Harbour and Sam Pans and bays from all over Hong Kong. “I saw a landscape he had done of the Hollywood Hills in California and I will never forget both his contemporary approach and ability to capture the absolute feeling of the place. He has done it again with Hong Kong,” notes de Tilly. With Spanish flair, Miguel Garcia, came to Hong Kong and tromped through Sham Shui Po buying raw canvas, stretching it and applying the gesso himself. He was then off with canvas and paints in hand to see our beautiful Hong Kong and relay it through his eyes and hand.
Marqués de Jadraque, the pseudonym of Miguel Garcia, was born in Palencia, Spain, where he received his early artistic education, since the age of ten, at the School of Applied Arts and Vocations. He then continued his studies in Barcelona. He now lives and works in Los Angeles.
With more than 30 one-man shows, 29 group shows and a multitude of commissions which include the Vatican behind him, Jadraque brings us an exceptional show during an extraordinary time in Hong Kong. We hope it will bring back all the positive images we have for our Beautiful Hong Kong.
Marqués de Jadraque will show his works in Hong Kong at 10 Chancery Lane Gallery from June 6-July 19, 2003. There will be a reception in full Spanish regalia on June 6, 2003 from 6pm.
