In Floating Moonlight -2, Huang Rui takes his abstraction even further by eliminating visible imagery from the newspapers altogether. Instead, he covers the entire canvas with layers of black paint and ink, embracing a state of total emptiness. This void becomes a way for him to explore the concept of space and time on a deeper, more meditative level. What remains visible are the brushstrokes, the textures of layered paint, and the interaction with the surrounding environment in which the work is displayed. Huang Rui hopes his work can attain a feeling of time. As he describes, “If you look at it long enough, it becomes like a melody.”

Huang Rui is one of China's most esteemed artists, known for his intellectual exploration of history, music, politics, and the world. What distinguishes him is his ability to distill complex ideas into simple, accessible forms. His artistic vision transcends aesthetic beauty, aiming to provoke thought, challenge conventions, and inspire dialogue.

As a founding member of The Stars Art Group (Xing Xing), Huang has been at the forefront of China’s avant-garde movement. His works, including Guitar’s Story and Courtyard Abstraction No.1, were recently featured in the retrospective exhibition "Freedom of Art: The Stars, Beijing, 1979" at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, where they now form part of the permanent collection, highlighting his enduring artistic legacy.
