Silver Sand Beach
Silver Sand Beach is a real beach, a landscape composed of countless tiny, off-white pebbles.
Silver Sand Beach is both sand and stone; it is also water—waves, rivers, and the sea. It is light—the morning glow, the clouds, a bright moon, and twinkling stars. Because of this, it appears white, gray, dark black, and sometimes a shade of blue like a sparrow’s tail.
I first remembered Silver Sand Beach twenty-five years ago, in the year 2000, when I made a plan to visit all the karesansui (dry landscape gardens) in Kyoto. During the day, I observed many rock and gravel gardens, imagining tranquility and the gradual distancing of nature, in contrast to the turbulence of life. My plan was never realized—of course, it was impossible to achieve. Time and again, I found myself returning to the rock garden of Ryoan-ji and the Silver Sand Beach of Ginkaku-ji.
The rock garden evokes endless imagination, perhaps reminiscent of the poetry of Li Bai and Su Dongpo, or the dramatic lines of Shakespeare. Silver Sand Beach, on the other hand, seems to have only one structural relationship: the moon and the calm, unshaken beach—a dialogue of forms. I visited it in the morning and at dusk, letting time and thoughts dissolve into the ripples of its surface, until all my anxieties faded away.
A special blessing came on a certain night afterward. By chance, I was able to visit Silver Sand Beach in the evening. Though I was permitted to stay for only a few minutes, that moment became an indelible memory, lasting for the next twenty years.
