“ LIQUID METROPOLIS” Redefines Reportage
in Fine Art Photography

Hong Kong  August, 2002  “Liquid Metropolis”, Fine Art photographer William Furniss’ second exhibition in Hong Kong will open on the 19th September, 2002 and run through 19th October, 2002 at 10 Chancery Lane Gallery.  The exhibition features an array of urban images, including Furniss’ unique extreme panoramas and oversized cityscapes conveying motion and energy in urban metropolises such as New York, Paris, London and Hong Kong.  Key to Furniss’ work is that the images that are seen have not been manipulated by any Photoshop editing and are produced using the purest method of photography, that is: the found image, the film and the photographer.

According to Furniss, “It has been my philosophy to use as little equipment as possible when shooting, resulting in a unique form of reportage which pushes the confines of two dimensional photography to its limit.  Through contrast, panning, multiple exposure and extended shutter speeds, the images capture dynamism and energy in these familiar urban settings.”

Motion and light are Furniss’ main inspiration for “Liquid Metropolis” shooting to convey those dynamic qualities through the traditionally still medium of photography.  According to gallery owner, Katie de Tilly, “Furniss maintains his stylistic ethos of rigorous avoidance of manipulating the content of the images by any other means that those available in the camera, leading this cityscapes vivid dimensions rarely seen in contemporary fine art photography.”
