FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
American Artist, Wayne Forte, shows his work at 10 Chancery Lane Gallery
Hong Kong, 21 January, 2002--10 Chancery Lane Gallery is proud to bring to Hong Kong, California-based-artist Wayne Forte, showing his newest works from March 19-May 7, 2002.
This group of figurative paintings evokes a certain flowing peacefulness. By way of his technique, his figures are at once giant and compressed into their image space. The tension inherent in this compressed monumentality creates an emotional intensity in each of his sensuous figures, each with their own inner life. The result is at the same time powerful and tranquil as the glimpse of expression is subtle but drives to your heart the feeling of each character.
Wayne Forte describes his intentions by stating, “I came up with the idea of squeezing a figure into too small a space in order to create tension and a reservoir of energy, by using anatomical distortion, shifting perspectives, cubist and exaggerated points of view. I was able to draw out powerful expression from the compressed space I had created.”
One can see the unique coming together of various influences in Wayne’s work. An Asian sensibility towards colour, the monumentality of Mexican muralists, the use of compression of figures of the Italian Renaissance, and use of German Expressionist line. Melinda Wortz wrote of Forte’s technique, “He has borrowed the Cubist use of fragmentation to break down objects into individual parts and reassembles them into a more expressive whole.”
There is a rich complexity in this work. Layers of influences and references, all supporting the inner spiritual depth of each piece.
Wayne Forte began as a landscape painter. In 1985 his work turned toward figurative expressionism and grew to express a spiritual dimension, sometimes evolving around Biblical themes--most likely an influence of a Filipino Mother and Irish Father.
His work has been displayed in the United States, the U.K., Asia and South America. A suite of etchings on the theme of sacrifice are part of the vast Vatican art collection. He has had over 30 major exhibitions.
The press is invited to a cocktail reception with the artist on March 19, 2002 from 6-9pm at 10 Chancery Lane Gallery, SoHo, located off Old Bailey Street, behind Central Police Station, opening hours are M-F 10-7, Saturdays 12-6.
