April 2002, Hong Kong---10 Chancery Lane Gallery is thrilled to bring to Hong Kong two great British photographers, Robert Freeman and Gered Mankowitz, featuring their work from the 1960’s focusing notably on the Beatles, Rolling Stones and other 60’s rock icons. From June 17th - 28th a rare selection of Freeman and Mankowitz’s photos will be exhibited at TaiKoo Place in Quarry Bay.
ROBERT FREEMAN met THE BEATLES in August 1963 and for the following three years photographed and designed five of their album covers MEET THE BEATLES, A HARD DAY’S NIGHT, BEATLES FOR SALE, HELP!, and RUBBER SOUL. He designed the title sequences for the films AHARD DAY’S NIGHT and HELP! and traveled with the group to Paris, Stockholm, New York, Miami, Austria, and the Bahamas.
From the beginning of their association, FREEMAN had an affinity with LENNON. When LENNON moved to London at the end of 1963 with his wife, CYNTHIA, and his son, Julian, her rented the apartment above FREEMAN at 13 Emperor’s Gate. It was there that FREEMAN designed and photographed the covers for LENNON’S two books, In His Own Write (1964) and A Spaniard in the Works (1965). As a result of this closeness, at home and in their travels, FREEMAN was able to capture the character and humor of LENNON in the exuberant phase of THE BEATLES’ rise to fame.
Gered Mankowitz was born in London, England, on 3rd August 1946. The first of four sons of the late author, playwright and film writer Wolf Mankowitz and his wife, the psychoanalyst Ann Mankowitz.
Gered Mankowitz’s images are equally famous and include several album covers of the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, and other music icons. He was the “appointed photographer of The Rolling Stones” and accompanied them on their autumn tour of 1965 to America and for more than three years he worked by their side. Mankowitz’s shot the groundbreaking Between The Buttons sleeve. As Mankowitz states, “There were many adventures as I found myself on the road with the greatest Rock band in the world at the peak of their original success.”
At the end of 1963 Gered opened his first studio, at 9 Masons Yard in the heart of London’s West End. On one side was the infamous disco “The Scotch of St.James” and on the other the art gallery “Indica”, partly financed by The Beatles and where John Lennon met Yoko Ono.
Within a few months Gered had already begun to make a name for himself, and he was approached to photograph Marianne Faithful, who had just had a big hit with “As Tears Go By”. Working closely with Marianne he got to know her manager and producer Andrew Loog Oldham. In early 1965, Oldham asked him to photograph the Rolling Stones, who he also managed and produced. This was a major turning point in Gered’s career, because from this first session came the cover for “Out of Our Heads” (U.S. title “December’s Children”), and as a result he was asked by the Stones to go to America with them on their record breaking 1965 tour. During this 9 week (48 city) tour of the U.S. Gered photographed the Stones on stage and off, and got particularly close to Keith and Charlie. There were many adventures as Gered found himself on the road with the greatest Rock band in the world at the peak of their original success. Gered continued working with the Stones as their ‘official’ photographer, producing photos for albums (“Between the Buttons”; “Got Live If You Want It”; “Big Hits”; and several others), press and publicity, taken at home, in the recording studio, on stage and behind the scenes until 1967, when the band broke off with their manager, Oldham.
Through the 60’s, Gered continued in the music world working with Oldham at his famous Immediate label, and with many major artists including Jimi Hendrix, Free, Traffic, The Yardbirds, The Small Faces, Soft Machine; and through the 70’s with Slade, Gary Glitter, Suzi Quatro, Sweet, Elton John, Kate Bush, Eurythmics, ABC, Duran Duran and many others.
There will be 60 photographs in this exclusive exhibition and all images are of small-edition-signed prints.
